From Memphis to the Magic City: The Hull Dobbs Ford Story

If you’ve driven past 9924 Parkway East recently, you may have noticed a name change. What was Iron City Ford is now Hull Dobbs Ford. While the sign is new, the name behind it goes back over a century.
Most Birmingham buyers don’t know the history behind the Hull Dobbs name. It’s a story worth telling because the people who built this business made decisions that are still uncommon today.
It Started With a $25,000 Loan in Memphis
In 1921, James K. Dobbs and his partner Horace Hull opened a Ford dealership at the corner of 3rd and Gayoso in downtown Memphis, Tennessee. Dobbs had taken out a $25,000 loan to make it happen — a significant bet on a relatively young industry and on his own ability to make it work.
The numbers came in fast. Within three years, the dealership was grossing over $1.25 million. Within a decade, the original store sold for ten times the loan value. James and Horace weren’t just selling cars; they were building something with staying power.
From One Store to a National Name
Hull-Dobbs didn’t stay in Memphis for long. The partners expanded across the country, eventually building what became the first national Ford dealership chain, with over 60 locations.
By the 1930s, Hull-Dobbs Ford had grown into the largest Ford store in the United States.
Along the way, they changed how car dealerships operated. In the late 1940s, they developed what became known as the Hull-Dobbs System, a profit-sharing model that gave salespeople a percentage of each sale. It was a novel idea at the time. Today, we call it a commission, and it’s standard across the industry.
A Name Lasting Through Generations
James K. Dobbs and Horace Hull both passed away in the 1960s, but the family’s involvement in the automotive business didn’t end with them. A second generation carried on, expanding the Dobbs name into airline catering, restaurants, and distribution alongside a growing dealership network.
A third generation introduced new brands, Honda and Toyota, and eventually grew the Dobbs Automotive Group into one of the largest dealership networks in the country before selling it in the late 1990s.
Over 100 years and four generations, the business kept finding its way back to cars. The Hull Dobbs name has meant something in this industry for a long time.
Why Birmingham?
The Dobbs family’s ties to Alabama run deeper than one dealership. The Springhill Automotive Group, which carries on the Dobbs automotive legacy, has operated across the Southeast for decades, with dealerships in Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia. Birmingham isn’t a new market for this family; it’s home turf.
The Magic City is also a natural fit for a Ford dealership. Birmingham drivers put serious miles on their vehicles — contractors, commuters, and families who need trucks and SUVs that can keep up. The F-150 is consistently one of the best-selling vehicles in the state, and the demand for dependable Ford service in the area is real.
