Keep Your Lightning Ready to Go this Winter - Hull Dobbs Ford Blog

The F-150 Lightning is one of the most recent additions to the famous line of Ford pickups. For many, it may be the first winter on the roads of Iron City. We have some tips to ensure you get the best range on your new Lighting, or any Ford EV, during the cool months. Haven’t checked out the Lightning or any of our other great Ford hybrids or EVs? Come to Hull Dobbs Ford to learn more about how an electric vehicle can work for you!

The first thing to keep in mind is Ford tested the Lightning’s battery under intense real-world conditions in Alaska and at temperatures as low as -40°F in the lab. Your Lightning won’t be facing quite such a chill while you’re tailgating at Legion Field, but there are some great tips to keep your Lightning’s range at its highest.

Parking

Keep your Lightning parked in a garage if possible, and keep it plugged in while parked. With Ford’s easy charging options, you can plug into any standard outlet. Additional available options like the Ford Charge Station Pro enable faster charging and even charging if the power is out using an internal battery backup.

Planning

If you know a long trip is in store, use the FordPass app on your smartphone to set your estimated departure time. While plugged in, the battery will warm up in anticipation of the trip at the scheduled time. If your Lightning is covered in snow, be sure to brush it all off, and not just the windshield. Excess snow adds additional weight and drag and forces the battery to work harder. Finally, keep your tires properly inflated, which is a fuel-saving trip for both gas and electric vehicles.

Driving

While you’re on the road, keep the heater low or off. It requires additional power and limits your range accordingly. If equipped with them, heated seats and steering wheels draw much less power and can keep you warm on the trip. While driving, maintain moderate speeds, as high speeds use more energy in cold weather.
