This summer is predicted to be one of the hottest the Gulf Coast has seen in decades. We at Hull Dobbs Ford know a scorcher when we see one, and on a hot summer day, there’s nothing like finding a bit of cold water to cool off. In the spirit of summer, here are our top three places to cool off in Birmingham!
Splash Adventure
Situated right next to the Alabama Adventure amusement park in Bessemer is our first pick, Splash Adventure Water Park. Originally opened in 1998 and under new ownership since 2014, this well-appointed water park has something for the whole family and several conveniences that most similar spots don’t have, like free parking, free soft drinks throughout the park, and free innertubes! The park features 26 separate attractions of varying sizes including water slides, a lazy river, and a wave pool. Admission to the water park comes with a ticket to Alabama Adventure as well, so you’ll get your money’s worth. Get there early to beat the crowds!
Homewood Central Community Pool
The Homewood Central Community Pool is probably the best appointed public pool we’ve ever seen. This place has it all: a full-size lap pool, a smaller family pool, a splash pad, and a hot tub, all with a large community center with locker rooms, showers, and a snack bar. This is a great place to bring the family, let the kids play in the family pool, and catch some sun on one of the many reclining chairs around the pool area. We’d venture to call this a small water park, it’s that comfortable.
Oak Mountain State Park
Just outside of Birmingham sits our final pick, Oak Mountain State Park. This destination is an outdoor paradise with activities ranging from an 18-hole golf course to camping and fishing on Double Oak lake. For those looking to cool off, there are two sandy beach areas to enjoy, one larger beach on Double Oak and one smaller on nearby Beaver Lake. Both are well-appointed with restrooms and plenty of space, and the larger beach features a seasonal snack bar with an array of summer treats. There’s even an inflatable obstacle course on Beaver Lake!
